March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

 Mar 01 - Mar 31, 2019 12:00 AM - 11:55 PM

Don't assume you're too young for colorectal cancer. Don't assume you're alone. And don't assume we don't need your support to end this disease within our lifetime.

"Don't Assume" is the Colorectal Cancer Alliance's 2019 National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month public awareness campaign. The goal is to challenge assumptions and misconceptions about colorectal cancer by dispelling myths, raising awareness, and connecting people across the country with information and support.

Screening is the number one way you can reduce your risk of colon cancer and rectal cancer. Despite its high incidence, colorectal cancer is unique in that it is one of the most preventable and, if found early, most treatable forms of cancer. And the best part is, screening is easy! From colonoscopy to at-home stool tests, there's an option for everyone. If you're over 50, high risk or symptomatic, don't put it off. Talk to your doctor about getting checked!

All men and women should be screened for colorectal cancer.

Your individual risk factors - such as ethnicity, lifestyle and family history - will determine when you should start getting checked.

The American Cancer Society recently recommended that adults without a family history should begin colorectal cancer screening at age 45.

The East Central Florida Cancer Control Collaborative (ECFCCC) is a group of local professionals from "safety net" healthcare facilities (county Health Departments, Qualified Health Centers, health clinics, etc.), primary care practices, hospitals, hospices, government agencies, nonprofits, and advocacy groups, as well as other community members. The group is brought together by the drive to provide area residents with reliable information about cancer prevention and treatment and better access to cancer care.

ECFCCC supports the local cancer community with resources, education, online training, presentations, networking opportunities, grant announcements, regional cancer data, communications tools, and more.

For information on local resources visit the East Central Florida Cancer Control Collaborative's website http://www.ecfccc.org/.
