Seminole County Healthy Weight Community Champions
August 16, 2018
SANFORD, Fla. - The Florida Department of Health in Seminole County (DOH-Seminole) is pleased to recognize the City of Casselberry, the City of Oviedo, and the City of Sanford as 2018 Healthy Weight Community Champions! These 3 cities were commended for implementing best health practices and policies to improve the “Built Environment” for their residents and visitors.
“We are excited that among the 46 recognized communities, three cities in Seminole County received the Healthy Weight Community Champions recognition, the second highest number in Florida. It is an honor to celebrate these three great partners who contribute to the health of Seminole County,” said Donna Walsh, health officer for the Department of Health in Seminole County. “We hope that the constant improvement in Seminole County’s performance inspires our residents to keep living a healthy lifestyle and our fellow counties to work together to become the healthiest state in the nation.”
Each local municipality was encouraged to participate by submitting the best practices and policies that were implemented in their city to demonstrate how they met the Healthy Community Champions criteria. Some of these best practices include: creating more wellness and fitness centers, building walkable communities to include more sidewalks and fitness trails, improving air and water quality, and providing more nutritious foods in vending machines and at farmers’ markets. “Receiving this recognition from the Florida Department of Health is a wonderful way to highlight the investment that city leaders are making to build healthier communities for residents,” said Herronda Mortimer, Healthiest Weight Florida Coordinator in Seminole County.
The Florida Department of Health started the Community Champions program as part of the Healthiest Weight Florida initiative. Healthiest Weight Florida is a public-private collaboration bringing together state agencies, local governments, non-profit and faith-based organizations, businesses, schools, entire communities, and every single Floridian resident to help Florida’s population consistently make informed and healthy choices about their diet and lifestyle.
