Sanford, Fla.– In observance of Veterans Day, Evergreen Cemetery, Incorporation will celebrate by partnering with the Florida Department of Health in Seminole County (DOH-Seminole) to host a free Veterans Day Celebration. The event will take place on Wednesday, November 11, 2015 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Evergreen Cemetery, 150 South Cypress Way, Casselberry, Florida. Chef Sennet Williams, founder of Candlelight Catering in Winter Park, will provide refreshments. Monica May, Public Affairs Director with STAR 94.5 FM, will be the Mistress of Ceremony. Special guest Congressman John Mica will also be in attendance.

The guest speaker will be Dr. Swannie Jett, Health Officer for DOH-Seminole. Dr. Jett is a national leader in public health with 20 plus years’ of experience. In April 2013, he was appointed as Health Officer for the Florida Department of Health in Seminole County. Currently,

Dr. Jett serves as President for the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO). Since 2001, he has worked in numerous leadership positions for the United States Army and Air Force National Guard. In 2014, Dr. Jett deployed to Senegal, Africa to assist with the Ebola Virus Outbreak. Presently, Dr. Jett is a Major and Public Health Officer for the Air Force National Guard.

Prior to accepting a Health Officer position in Seminole County, Dr. Jett worked in various executive-level positions with the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Bullitt County Health Department in Shepherdsville, Kentucky. As a Health Officer in Bullitt County, Dr. Jett advocated for a Smoke-Free policy and won the Appellant Court decision by a vote of 2-1.

Dr. Jett is passionate about health equity, improving population health, addressing social determinants, eradicating homelessness, and increasing access to affordable housing and transportation. He works tirelessly to cultivate relationships with community partners.

Dr. Jett graduated from Tennessee State University in 1992 with a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Science. Afterwards, he attended the University of Tennessee where he earned a Master of Science in Bio-Systems Engineering. After receiving his master’s degree, Dr. Jett obtained a Doctor of Public Health in Preventative Medicine from the University of Kentucky. 

The Evergreen Cemetery is accepting donations at a minimum of $5 for entry into a drawing for a HP Laser Jet Printer P2055 DN (home printer) and a HP Color Laser Jet Printer M551 (commercial business printer).  All proceeds from the drawing will be used to enhance the electrical system and structure at Evergreen Cemetery.
