Florida Department of Health in Seminole CountyFlorida Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program

The Florida Department of Health in Seminole County (DOH-Seminole) is committed to the health of Seminole County residents and is proud to be able to have the Diabetes Program locally to benefit those affected by diabetes and help prevent others from developing the disease.

The Diabetes Program is based on the philosophy that medical supervision, along with education in the area of prevention and self-care management, nutrition, exercise, medication, and attitude are important components in the successful prevention and management of diabetes. Clients are self-referred to program services or referred by their primary health care provider for prevention, education and management training.

If you have been diagnosed with diabetes or have a family history of diabetes, you can make changes and continue to enjoy the benefits of a healthier more energetic lifestyle.

Take Charge of Diabetes

Unlike many health conditions, diabetes is managed primarily by the person it affects, with support from a healthcare professional. Lifestyle changes, such as shifting to a healthier diet and exercising regularly, can reduce the risk of diabetes.

But becoming smarter about diabetes - its causes, effects, and treatments - is vital to avoiding the risk.

DOH-Seminole offers diabetes self-care education classes to help residents control their diabetes. The Diabetes Empowerment Education Program (Spanish) (DEEP) helps participants understand how diabetes works, realize the benefits of meal planning and exercise, and identify and prevent diabetic complications. The goal is to help participants reduce their diabetes risk by making small lifestyle changes. Classes meet once a week for six weeks.

If you are interested learning more about DEEP or signing up for classes, please contact DOH-Seminole at 407-665-3235 or 407-665-3026.

Diabetes Risk Screening

DOH-Seminole clients and community members are offered the opportunity to take the diabetes risk test and have their blood screened to find out if he/she may be at risk for diabetes. It only takes a few minutes, doesn’t hurt and may put one on the path to a healthier tomorrow. Screenings may also be scheduled for community wide events upon request.

Take the Risk Test from the National Campaign partnership between American Medical Association (AMA), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Ad Council to continue the fight against type 2 diabetes.
