Epidemiology

Epidemiology

Conducts surveillance and investigations of sporadic cases and outbreaks of reportable diseases and conditions.

Epidemiology is a core public health function. Physicians and other health care professionals are required by Florida law to report any disease of public health significance to the Florida Department of Health. This is typically done through a county health department’s epidemiology program.

Our epidemiology program monitors diseases other than tuberculosis (TB), sexually transmitted diseases and infections (STD/STIs), and HIV/AIDS. Our staff investigates disease outbreaks to identify the source, intervene to protect others who may be at risk, and identify ways to prevent additional cases. Our staff also provides disease control education and consultation for the public, physicians, veterinarians, hospitals, schools, daycares, nursing homes, animal services, and other institutions in the community.
