Internships and volunteers
The Florida Department of Health in Seminole County (DOH-Seminole) offers students and volunteers a unique opportunity to gain valuable experience in public health within a state government organization. By working with federal, state, and county programs, we strive to address the community’s health needs while developing future public health leaders. Our commitment extends to supporting effective professionals, sharing public health knowledge, and providing guidance to students and volunteers to achieve our mission of improving community health.
Clinical Internships
Graduate Level
- Nurse Practitioner (ARNP, FNP): Practicums in Women’s Health (no adult, pediatric, or prenatal services).
- Dietary Nutritionist (WIC): Provides nutrition counseling to clients.
- Dental Services: Open to Dental Assistants. Services include exams, X-rays, cleanings, fluoride treatments, sealants, fillings, and extractions.
Undergraduate Level
- Limited practicum opportunities are available for baccalaureate-level nursing students.
Vocational Internships
- Open to Dental Assistants.
Note: Graduate nursing practicums for MSN degrees are not currently available.
Non-Clinical Internships
Available at undergraduate and graduate levels in the following areas:
- Epidemiology
- Environmental Health
- Office of Health Promotion and Education
- Marketing/Branding
- HIV/AIDS Program
- Tuberculosis/Refugee Health
- Quality and Performance Improvement

Volunteer Opportunities
Share your skills and passion for public health by volunteering with DOH-Seminole. When applying, indicate your areas of interest and any relevant skills that could assist in matching you with a program.
- Acceptance is determined by agency needs and cannot be guaranteed.
- Volunteers are subject to a Level 2 background screening.
The Application Process
- Eligibility: You must be at least 18 years old before starting your duties. Due to limited availability and resources, not all applications may be accepted.
- Application Types:
- Submission: Complete the online application with all required details.
- Next Steps: If accepted, you will be notified by the Internship Coordinator to arrange your interview, background screening, and orientation.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What are the requirements for participating?
- You must be at least 18 years old to volunteer or intern with DOH-Seminole.
- Complete and submit the online application, following the instructions for interns or volunteers.
- Participate in a telephone and/or face-to-face interview.
- Successfully complete a Level 2 background screening, including fingerprinting. For interns, there is a $37.25 fee for this process. Background clearance may take up to 1 month to be received.
- Complete agency orientation and required training, including the Florida Code of Ethics, Information Security, Confidentiality, and HIPAA (privacy). Additional training may be required depending on the internship role. Note: Orientation sessions are held twice monthly.
When should I apply for an academic internship?
The earlier, the better! Positions, especially those in health clinics, often reach capacity months in advance.
Are internships paid?
No, all internships are unpaid. However, interns may receive course credit for hours worked, along with valuable real-world experience to enhance their resumes when seeking future paid positions.
What hours will I be required to work?
Schedules are flexible and based on:
- Academic requirements,
- Department needs, and
- Intern availability. Typical workdays are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Some weekend or after-hours activities may occur for community events.
Can non-students participate in the internship program?
If you are not in school, you may still participate as a volunteer instead. Complete the application for volunteers, including submitting two personal references.
